AmEx predicts downturn in insurance...

Britons are cutting back on important insurance protection due to their shrinking budgets, it was suggested today.

According to a new report from American Express, one in four Britons is planning to stop paying for travel insurance due to the financial pressures of the current economic downturn.

Elsewhere, 30 percent of people were planning to cut down on payment protection insurance, while 17 percent said that they would ditch pet insurance.

Worryingly, 12 per cent also said that they planned to reduce their credit card payments - potentially trapping them in a debt spiral.

Moreover, this unwillingness could also extend to homeowner loans.

Chris Rolland at AmEx commented: "Life may be getting more expensive, but it is worrying that 48 per cent of Brits are planning to cut back on the policies that are designed to protect them during hard times. This may well be a false economy as people could end up paying out much more than they bargained for if something should happen."

He added: "To a growing number of Brits there are never enough hours in the day, and as people start to feel the financial pressure, things are being dropped from the priority list."
