Buyers avoiding stamp duty...

An increasing number of borrowers are avoiding stamp duty, according to new research from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).

Figures suggest that around 50 per cent of borrowers did not pay the tax in September.

At the same time, the sum borrowed by first-time buyers has also been in decline.

First-time buyers borrowed an average of £104,500 in September, down from £108,000 in August. Income multiples have reached the lowest level since March 2006 with new homeowners borrowed 3.18 times their monthly income.

CML director general, Michael Coogan, commented: "While house purchase activity has reached exceptionally low levels, it is encouraging to see transaction costs lowered for a larger proportion of borrowers.

"The government should consider what other measures can be brought forward to enable the market to transact more easily."

The total number of loans taken out for house purchase dropped 57 per cent from September 2007 to 35,000.
