Campaigners call for 'credit crunch lunches'...

Cash-strapped Brits can save a surprisingly large amount of money by cutting down on food waste, a new study has revealed.

The survey, from campaign group Love Food Hate Waste, found that £5.1 billion worth of food that can be used for lunchboxes is unnecessarily thrown away each year.

It also found that a similar amount was spent on lunch food in shops and that almost a third of workers always buy their midday meal in this way.

A similar amount said that they always prepared their lunch at home, however.

Love Food Hate Waste spokeswoman Julia Falcon said: "There's obviously a move by some of us to save money and bring lunch to work, and this new survey shows that some of us could be saving up to as much as £120 each to spend at Christmas if we start free lunching now.

"Most of the time there's a packed lunch waiting in the fridge if only we noticed it, and there really is such a thing as a free lunch when you take last night's leftovers with you."
