Fuel poverty increase marked by government...

Many more Britons are falling in to fuel poverty - and might feel forced into applying for bad credit loans to make ends meet.

New government figures have found that one million more households were spending over ten per cent of their income on fuel bills over 2006.

Around 3.5 million homes were found to be suffering from the problem by the department of the environment and the department for business.

Of this total, 2.75 million were classed as being "vulnerable" - with at-risk people such as those with long-term illnesses and children living in the household.

The official fuel poverty total seems likely to rise further - with energy firms imposing double-digit price rises to their general plans this year.

Commenting on the figures to the BBC, Tony Woodley at the Unite union said: "The government cannot stand back while struggling households chose whether to heat or eat.

"If intervention is on hand to bail out the speculators and spivs who have caused this economic turmoil, then our government should not have to think twice about helping the frail and vulnerable heat their homes."
