GDP fall tracked by ONS...

The economy suffered negative growth over the three months to September, the government said today.

New Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show that the economy shrunk by 0.5 per cent - the first negative result since the early 1990s.

The drop, ahead of analysts' expectations, also drags the annual growth rate down to 0.3 per cent.

Separate high street retail sales figures for September, released earlier this week, also entered negative territory - tracking a 0.4 per cent drop over the month.

"Weaker service industries, construction and production output drove the deceleration in growth," the ONS said in a statement.

In an interview with the BBC today, chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling expressed hope that the long-term fundamentals of the economy remained strong.

"It will be a difficult period, but I am absolutely confident we will get through it," he told the broadcaster.

"We want to help people get through this period, putting more money in their pockets."
