'Interest rates unlikely to budge for a while'...

Interest rates are likely to stay frozen for a few more months, according to a leading financial analyst at the Global Insight consultancy.

Howard Archer says the Bank of England is more likely than not to maintain the official lending rate, which is currently at five per cent, until at least the end of the year.

The goods news is that soft economic activity and rising unemployment should help rein in inflation.

This would allow the Bank of England's rate-setting committee to cut rates at the end of 2008 or the start of 2009.

"I think they will probably keep interest rates unchanged for quite a few more months to come but I do expect the next move to be ultimately downwards," he stated.

The previous change in interest rates was a cut of 0.25 percentage points back in April. The next rate decision is due tomorrow (August 7th).

Over in the US, the Federal Reserve has voted to hold the main lending rate at two per cent.
